Northeast Iowa Community College announces writing contest winners

The annual writing contest is open to all currently enrolled students. Learning Center writing instructors on each campus organize the contest.
PEOSTA & CALMAR— Northeast Iowa Community College has announced the winners of the 2020 Writing Contest. This year, 12 students across the district were recognized for excellence in writing.
On the Peosta campus, students could enter long or short essays. The following six students were chosen as winners:
Long Essays
1st place — Olivia Merritt, Riceville, “Thanksgiving Eve”
2nd place — Devin Freeman, Cascade, “The Significance of the Human Heart”
Honorable mention — Madeline Harbaugh, Peosta, “Chronic Kidney Disease and Its Effects”
Short Essays
1st place — Calasandra Spray, Manchester, “Why I Write”
2nd place — Olivia Winter, Scales Mound, Ill., “An Honor”
Honorable mention — Madeline Streicher, Edgewood, “Puppy Chow Perfection”
On the Calmar campus, students could enter prose or poetry. The following students were chosen as winners:
Prose
1st place — Chad Klegseth, Decorah, “Handsome Hank”
2nd place — Summer Knight, Cresco, “Treasure”
Honorable mention — Miann Barr, Waukon, “Prey”
Poetry
1st place — Amanda Swenson, Waukon, “She Lived”
2nd place — Jillian Kelso, North Collins, “To the One Who Didn’t Love Me”
Honorable mention — Maria Streif, Maynard, “Snowflakes”
The annual writing contest is open to all currently enrolled students. Learning Center writing instructors on each campus organize the contest. Entries are judged anonymously.
