NICC responds to workforce shortages with new, tuition-free Assembly Operator program

In the program students complete OSHA safety training and learn production assembly concepts, LEAN manufacturing principles, and how to use tools and equipment used in the industry.
PEOSTA, Iowa—Northeast Iowa Community College has created a new Assembly Operator short-term training program to address workforce shortages of skilled workers in the Dubuque area. Through the support of multiple funding sources, NICC is able to offer the class at no cost.
NICC launched the program this month after conversations with local manufacturers needing more production assembly workers. Students enrolling the program develop their skills through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on training in a new lab at the Peosta campus.
The College developed the curriculum to train students for these particular skills, according to Mark Gerein, NICC dean of advanced manufacturing, industrial technology and computer science.
“High quality assembly skills are in short supply in our community. We worked with several local manufacturers to come up with a curriculum that would address their needs. The Assembly Operator certificate program is intended to provide the basic industry-relevant skills needed for a successful career as a production assembler. Additionally, for companies that want to provide earn and learn opportunities to employees to gain these skills or want to upskill in a particular area, we can adapt and offer training specific to their needs,” Gerein stated.

This includes use of various hand tools, torque tools, hydraulic assembly practices, and electrical/wire harness assembly and proper hoist practices.
