Northeast Iowa Community College has been developing athletic programs over the last few years in hopes of growing its student population. On May 1, the College officially hired Nick Weinmeister to fill the athletic director position.
Weinmeister brings 10 years of coaching and three years of National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) administration experience. His first day at NICC will be May 28, but he already has a list of goals.
“The top priorities upon starting will be relationship building, creating a strong and maintainable action plan and creating awareness within the communities NICC serves about the great things to come with the addition of programs within the athletic department,” Weinmeister said.
Although his primary focus will be driving the department forward, he recognizes this as an opportunity for prospective students to see all of the educational and student life programming offered at NICC.
Weinmeister mentioned how great it was to see how many staff and faculty members were excited about athletics during his interview process and what this could do for the College.
"When you have so many people with a vested interest," he said, "it's motivating to know that they entrusted me as the athletic director to get everything off the ground and build something great."
The College’s athletic department is still in its infancy stage, but Weinmeister has a vision of what it can become in a few years.
“I am confident that within the first five years," he said, "this department will have established programs that will bring a positive campus environment and culture, programs that will compete for regional championships and a continued commitment to growth and expansion for years to come.”
He added that it's an honor to be chosen to lead the athletic department and is excited that he and his family are part of the NICC community. Weinmester is anxious to start building something great.
“Get ready for Cougar Athletics to hit the ground running and provide an exciting product that the people of northeast Iowa will be proud to support," he said. "Go Cougars!”
NICC currently has two athletic programs - Esports and Sports Shooting. Both programs are relatively new to the college but have seen some success over their first couple of seasons. Stay up-to-date with all Cougar Athletics news at nicc.edu/news.
